The swagger is gone, the tone subdued when Brazilians talk about their quest for a record fifth World Cup title. They're no longer No. 1, and they know the road back to the top is a hard one.

"France and Argentina are in better shape," Brazil's coach Luiz Felipe Scolari admits. "They still are ahead of us in various aspects."

Such modesty doesn't come naturally to Brazil, the only country to have qualified for every World Cup, a six-time finalist and champion in 1958, 1962, 1970 and 1994. A World Cup without Brazil? You might as well play it ...
