LONDON, May 17 Reuters - Martina Hingis' French Open dreams lay in tatters today as she was forced to withdraw from the one grand slam tournament she has yet to capture because of an ankle injury.

The Swiss will undergo surgery on Monday after tests revealed one torn and three loose ligaments in her left ankle.

Without a major win since the 1999 Australian Open - her fifth grand slam trophy - Hingis has suffered several disappointments of late.
