Soc: Prisoners in Indian state get TVs to watch World Cup

CALCUTTA, India, May 18 AFP - The government in the Indian state of West Bengal is installing television in jails so prisoners can watch World Cup matches, officials said Saturday.

"World Cup fever has caught on with both male and female prisoners. They are excited over the biggest soccer event and talking about the star players - - (Brazilian) Ronald, (Frenchman) Zinedine Zidane and (Argentinian) Gabriel Batistuta," said H.R. Hussain, the superintendent of a jail in Calcutta, the capital of West Bengal.

"Some are even trying to ape the soccer stars in the playgrounds of the jails," ...
