SYDNEY, May 19 AAP - About 50 protesters waved Tibetan flags outside Prime Minister John Howard's Sydney residence today, urging him to meet with the Dalai Lama in the coming week.

A large crowd greeted the Dalai Lama in Melbourne today at the start of a nine-day visit that will also take him to Canberra and Sydney.

Mr Howard has indicated he will not meet with the Tibetan religious leader, saying they met in 1996.
