Dateline: SINGAPORE A Singaporean woman who fell critically ill after taking diet pills from China has died, a hospital spokeswoman said Sunday.

Rani Raja, 43, was admitted to Gleneagles Hospital on May 9 with liver failure suspected of being caused by the diet pills, which contained a chemical banned in Singapore and in many other countries.

Surgeons removed Raja's liver Thursday after her condition deteriorated, and she was sustained for about 36 hours by a dialysis machine and ventilator. She died Saturday at 2:45 p.m. (745 GMT), said Genevieve Woo, a hospital spokeswoman.
