Buckingham Palace fire put out

LONDON, Jun 02, 2002 (United Press International via COMTEX) -- Firefighters Sunday extinguished a blaze that broke through the roof of Buckingham Palace Sunday, forcing an evacuation of hundreds from the building and grounds.

The fire -- issuing from a rest room in the west wing -- was put out within an hour if its discovery and no injuries were reported, according to the British Broadcasting Corp.

Police evacuated the palace and the grounds, where preparations had been underway for a concert celebrating the Golden Jubilee -- the 50th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth's coronation.
