EAST PALO ALTO, Calif. (AP) _ Teachers helped students cheat on standardized tests at a public school that has won national recognition for educating poor and minority students, the San Jose Mercury News reported Friday.

Eleven former students at Costano School in East Palo Alto told the newspaper that teachers either gave pupils answers or strongly hinted at them. One former teacher acknowledged the practice. Another said the administration encouraged it.

"This was the message: `You do whatever you need to do to get those scores up,'" said former teacher Charles Salter.

Marthelia Hargrove, who has been principal since 1990, denied she encouraged cheating.
