AFL: Umpires association calls for public comment

MELBOURNE, June 17 AAP - The AFL Umpires' Association wants the men in white to be able to comment publicly about controversial decisions.

Reacting to Saturday's ugly scenes at Optus Oval, association chief executive Rob Anderson suggested umpires should have the option to explain hotly-debated calls.

The media is restricted in its access to the umpires for comment and AFL umpiring director Jeff Gieschen usually speaks on their behalf.
