Housing starts jump 11.6 percent

WASHINGTON, Jun 18, 2002 (United Press International via COMTEX) - - The Commerce Department said Tuesday that U.S. housing starts posted their largest rise in almost seven years during May, surging 11.6 percent to a seasonally adjusted annual rate 1.73 million units.

The May increase was the largest since July 1995.

Most economists on Wall Street were expecting housing starts to rise 2.9 percent during the month after falling 5.4 percent in April and 7.8 percent in March while rising 2.8 percent back in February.
