Efforts to protect cultural sites in Afghanistan and the Palestinian
territories will figure prominently at a meeting of UNESCO's World
Heritage Committee which opened Monday.
"The World Heritage in the Middle East is particularly rich ... and
the protection and preservation of these sites has to be a priority,
" Mounir Bouchenaki, UNESCO's Assistant Director-General for Culture,
told the organization's 26th annual meeting. "No effort should be
spared."
Among the sites named in a draft dealing with the Palestinian territories
are the historic center of Nablus, the Old City of Hebron and the
Basilica of the Nativity in ...
