Japan is being forced to do some soul-searching about how it stacks
up against World Cup co-host and longtime Asian rival South Korea
on the international stage as the tournament moves toward its close.
Anxiety is growing that Japan's ego _ bruised by South Korea's stunning
performance at the tournament _ is even taking a hit in the world
outside soccer, from the vitality of the two economies to the spiritual
strength of the cultures.
Getting upstaged by South Korea was more than this nation had bargained
