Wednesday, July 3, 2002 -- Yesterday might very well come to mark
a turning point in modern Arab history. For the first time in recent
memory, a group of prominent Arab intellectuals held up a mirror to
Arab society, courageously offering a precise description of what
they saw, warts and all. Not surprisingly, the picture they painted,
particularly with regard to political freedom and social development,
was both unflattering and deeply disturbing.
