A crowd of Sikhs protested outside Prime Minister Tony Blair's 10
Downing St. office on Wednesday, demanding the right to be recognized
as a separate ethnic group when equal opportunity is measured.
"There are 600,000 Sikhs in this country, and we need to be recognized,
" said Amrik Singh, president of the Federation of Sikhs Organization.
"We need to be monitored separately," he said. "We want our fair share
of jobs and grants. We feel we are losing out."
Under Britain's racial equality law, Sikhs are recognized as members
of both a religion and an ethnic group.
