Trying to make the debate not about religion and morals but about taxes and other tangibles, a national gay rights group on Wednesday made New Jersey the front line in its fight for the right of same- sex couples to marry.

The battleground is no accident, given that New Jersey courts have been kind on the subject of gay rights.
