Dateline: BERLIN German unemployment hit a four-year high for June, official figures showed Tuesday, highlighting how firms have slashed jobs as Europe' s No.1 economy sputters and turning up the heat on Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder less than 11 weeks before national elections.

The rise of 7,900 in the jobless total compared to May was too small to move the rate, which stayed at 9.5 percent. But the new total of 3.954 million out of work was the highest for the month since June 1998.
