An Oregon Indian tribe has put on hold -- at least temporarily -- efforts to develop casino-related facilities on 175 acres east of Hood River, Ore., in the heart of the Columbia River Gorge. The Confederated Tribes of the Warm Springs still could build its 75,000-square-foot casino, a parking structure and other buildings on 40 acres of trust land it owns just south of the Historic Columbia River Highway. But that could require a huge and expensive engineering effort, because the wooded parcel is very steep, with slopes of at least 60 percent.
