A new drama is playing out behind the scenes at La Scala as it undergoes
a major renovation, and while it's not as tragic as "La Traviata"
or as bloody as "Tosca," it's certainly theatric enough for the great
opera house.
With restoration under way on La Scala _ and the stage already gutted
_ preservationists have gone to court to try to stop work to tear
down the stage and backstage area, arguing that the space is just
as historically important as the 18th century theater's delicate boxes
and galleries.
The legal action comes nearly six months after La Scala was closed
