About this time 140 years ago, someone new started contributing to
the Virginia City Territorial Enterprise, a daily newspaper in what
was then the territory of Nevada. First, letters to the editor appeared
in the paper, signed Josh, but their quality and wit were so impressive
that their author was soon offered the position of local editor at
$25 a week. Samuel Clemens, soon writing under what would become quite
