Dateline: PENDANG, Malaysia Muslim fundamentalists who want to declare a hardline Islamic state in Malaysia won a key by-election Thursday, fending off a challenge from Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad's ruling party.

The two parties were contesting a state assembly seat and a parliamentary seat that came open after the death of Fadzil Noor, the leader of the Pan-Malaysia Islamic Party.

The hardline Islamic party retained the state assembly seat, election officials said.
