Muslim fundamentalists who want to declare a hardline Islamic state
in Malaysia won a key by-election Thursday, fending off a challenge
from Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad's ruling party.
The two parties were contesting a state assembly seat and a parliamentary
seat that came open after the death of Fadzil Noor, the leader of
the Pan-Malaysia Islamic Party.
The hardline Islamic party retained the state assembly seat, election
officials said.
Counting was still under way for Fadzil's parliamentary seat, but
the fundamentalists were leading by about 1,400 votes after results
from about 75 percent of the 40,000 ballots had been counted, ...
