Monday, July 22, 2002 -- Israel's cable companies yesterday requested a domestic telecommunications license from the Communications Ministry, indicating they intend to keep to a government- set timetable that expects the merged cable company to compete with Bezeq on voice services by 2005.

Communications Minister Reuven Rivlin said that the request was evidence that Israel is moving toward an open, competitive domestic telecommunications market, but analysts were more circumspect.
