BEIJING (AP) _ Until this week, the island of Nauru warranted barely a word in People's Daily, the official Communist Party newspaper _ five mentions in five years. But suddenly, the tiny South Pacific nation is one of Beijing's brightest stars.

The reason for Nauru's unlikely, undoubtedly temporary ascent: The country of 12,000 people dropped diplomatic relations with Taiwan and, in an all-smiles ceremony held Sunday in Hong Kong, signed on with China.
