KINSHASA, Congo (AP) _ Thousands of Hutu fighters from Rwanda who are fighting for the central government in neighboring Congo will defy a peace agreement that calls for them to return home, a spokesman said Wednesday.

The Hutus are suspects in Rwanda's 1994 genocide and fear charges could be brought against them if they return home. Most of the Hutu fighters fled to Congo after the mass slaughter of a half-million Rwandans, most of them members of Rwanda's Tutsi minority.

"We are ready to face justice, but we do not trust the Rwandan justice, " militia spokesman Christophe Hakizabera told The Associated Press in Kinshasa.
