European court condemns France on Papon
PARIS, Jul 25, 2002 (United Press International via COMTEX) -- The
European Court of Human Rights ruled Thursday France violated the
European Human Rights Convention by blocking Nazi war collaborator
Maurice Papon from seeking judicial appeal and a right to a fair trial.
The Strasbourg-based court's decision comes a day after a French judge
rejected an appeal to free 91-year-old Papon, who is serving a 10-
year jail sentence for overseeing the deportation of Jews to Nazi
concentration camps in World War II.
