Rio Mayor Cesar Maia lit a ceremonial torch Wednesday to officially
open the South American Games, which will take place over 10 days
in four different cities.
South American Sports Association President Antonio Rodriguez and
Brazilian Olympic Committee president Carlos Arthur Nuzman were also
on hand for the kickoff.
The first athletic events will take place Thursday in Rio de Janeiro,
Sao Paulo, Belem, a port city at the mouth of the Amazon river, and
Curitiba, in southern Brazil.
The games, uniting 2,069 athletes from 14 countries participating
in 26 sports, is the largest international athletic event Brazil has
