A majority of Taiwanese say they favor passing a law that would allow
a public vote on the island's future, even though China has warned
that such a plebiscite could start a war, a ruling party poll said
Wednesday.
The survey by the Democratic Progressive Party was conducted after
President Chen Shui-bian's said last weekend that he supported amending
the law so that the referendum could be held.
Chen's remarks angered China, which argues that self-ruled Taiwan
belongs to the mainland. The two sides split amid civil war in 1949,
and Beijing has warned that moves toward a permanent split could
spark a conflict.
