SA: Federal Court orders release of Woomera detainee

ADELAIDE, Aug 15 AAP - The Federal Court of Australia today ordered a Palestinian man be released from the Woomera detention centre, ruling his detention unlawful.

Akram Ouda Mohammad Al Masri left the detention centre, in South Australia's far north, late today and was being driven to Adelaide, where he will stay with an uncle tonight.

His case is expected to be used as a precedent for other Palestinians in detention who have also been refused permission to go home.

Mr Al Masri, 25, has been detained since arriving by boat at Ashmore reef after leaving Israel in June 2001.
