Sunrise glinted off serene Thunder Bay and the clear air offered stunning
views of islands, rugged coastline and miles (kilometers) of green
water.
But the Lake Huron bay didn't earn its name or notorious reputation
on balmy late summer days like Friday.
The lake bottom off northeast Michigan is a shipping graveyard, littered
with hundreds of steamers and schooners that gambled loads of grain,
ore and sailors' lives against unpredictable late fall weather.
