JOHANNESBURG, Feb. 24 (AIA/GIN) -- Trade unions from 14
countries met in Johannesburg recently to air their grievances
regarding labor practices of the world's largest mining company,
Rio Tinto.
In the first meeting of its kind, hosted by the National Union
of Mineworkers, unionists considered a strategy to deal with the
company's refusal to adhere to the trade union rights.
The unions affiliated to the 28 million strong world Federation
of Chemical Mine Workers' Union have accused the company of pushing
for anti-labor changes in existing worker protection laws that
would penalize unionized workers.
