''There's a lot of bad pizza out there,'' Paolo Prota Giurleo says. In his view, however, that's a good thing. He is managing director of Autogrill SpA, an Italian company that is the second-largest food-service outfit in Europe, and he is convinced that bad pizza is going to give his company the chance it wants to play on the world stage.

''We're getting ready to do with pizza what McDonald's did with hamburgers: that is, guarantee a good standard quality and make it easy to purchase and consume,'' he says.
