EGYPT'S ban on The Jerusalem Post is perhaps the saddest commentary on Foreign Minister Shimon Peres's vision of "The New Middle East." It was Egypt, the leading Arab country, that raised expectations of a new era in Arab-Israeli relations by signing a peace treaty with Israel 15 years ago. And it is on Egypt that the government has relied to serve as a bridge to the Arab world. Even those who believe that the root cause of the conflict is the Palestinian problem realize that only Egypt can lead the Arab regimes to accept Israel as an integral part of the region. Clearly, the dream of a new Middle East cannot be realized without Egypt.
