THE Dead Sea Scrolls, whose origin has been the subject of fierce scholarly debate for a generation, have now been provided by science with firm confirmation about at least one aspect of their being - many of the scrolls, if not the bulk, are older than Jesus.
Carbon-14 tests of 15 of the scrolls carried out at the University of Arizona in Tucson show that most are dateable to the first and second centuries BCE.
The finding, released this week, is of some significance in the polemics surrounding the scrolls, since there are a few scholars in the world, including Israel, who have linked them directly to the founders of Christianity. In the ...
