LAST Tuesday, in front of a packed Beethoven Hall in the center of this southern German city, the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra performed no fewer than 14 world premieres.
The occasion was the European Music Festival Stuttgart 1995, organized by the local International Bach Academy, home of the world-renowned Gachinger Kantorei choir.
The work was the Requiem der Versohnung (Requiem of Reconciliation), commissioned by the festival from 14 different composers to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the end of the war and to illustrate "creative, peaceful coexistence."
