Sami Michael was active in the left-wing underground movement in Iraq until he immigrated to Israel in 1949. He wrote first in Arabic and then in Hebrew, and he has a number of realistic novels to his credit. Refuge is about an Arab poet who finds sanctuary in a Jewish home in Haifa; A Trumpet in the Wadi features a young Arab woman living in the Arab section of Haifa. Michael himself lives in Haifa.
