ONE hundred years ago today in Vienna, Martha Freud gave birth to a baby who would grow up to have a profound effect on children throughout the Western World.

Anna Freud, the youngest daughter of Martha and Sigmund Freud, grew up in a household where she had to compete for her father's attention not only with her siblings, mother and aunt, but with perhaps his favorite child of all, psychoanalysis.
