IT HAS been said, correctly, that people who have no idea they value enough to consider it worth dying for, really have nothing worth living for.

This is one crucial lesson of the Hanukka story and all stories of readiness to give one's life for a noble, transcendent value.

And it is why the Hanukka story was so long a source of inspiration for the Jews and Christians.

I say "was" advisedly.

Too many Israeli Jews of our allegedly post-Zionist, post-Jewish era think of sports teams, a health fund and beer when we hear "Maccabee," rather than of the Hasmonean Maccabees who fought the Jewish Hellenizers and their Syrian Greek Seleucid patrons 21 ...
