JACK Shepherd got a very nice going-away gift. Just two weeks before he brought his The One Tree Company and Chasing the Moment here, the play won the UK Time Out Award for the best fringe play of 1995.
It had already won Best Fringe at the 1995 Edinburgh Festival, so playwright and actor Shepherd was understandably pleased because he had written it. He also stars in it as Les Padmore, leader of a jazz quartet.
Once friends as well as colleagues, the members of his troupe have grown apart over the years and now they meet only on stage.
"I wrote the play for the others, not for me," he says over the phone from his home in the London suburb of Forest ...
