Agnon wrote four novels and his genius exudes from almost every page, but he will probably be remembered mostly for his short stories. Over a 70-year career, he wrote hundreds, many of which remain unpublished.

Agnon's stories explore the range of Jewish experience in the modern era. He knew no evil men; his characters are virtuous even if they are sometimes misguided. Many saintly men and women appear throughout his pages, but they are very lonely people - reflecting, no doubt, Agnon's own life.
