Musician/songwriter Martin Davidson remembers writing the tune that won the first Jerusalem Song Contest in 1979. It took him five minutes.

"I'd just gotten off the plane from the US, and my manager wanted to hear the song," he says. "I hadn't written it yet. It was after 11 o'clock, but I went straight to the home of composer Avi Maslo and said, 'Let me use your piano for five minutes.'

"I wanted to do something about Jerusalem. So I started with a few hassidic chords, added some simple words - Yerushalayim, Yerushalayim, yom-dikidikidum, yom-dikidum - and there it was. Quick and easy, that's the key to any song.
