Article: Modigliani Given to Israel Museum

A number of remarkably generous donations have been pledged to the Israel Museum in honor of its forthcoming 30th anniversary next year. First to arrive is a portrait of Jeanne Hebuterne, one of many made in 1918 by her great love, the Italian-Jewish painter Amedeo Modigliani (1884-1920). Two years later Jeanne leapt to her death during the painter's funeral, leaving behind an infant daughter. The oil, now on view at the museum, has been donated by Stella Fischbach of New York, in memory of Harry Fischbach. It is valued at millions of dollars.
