BUTTONHOLING me on my first visit to Germany 35 years ago, a middle-aged German insisted on declaring his admiration for Israelis.

"When you see kibbutz kids, the persecution of these people makes no sense," he loudly enthused. "Why, some of them are blonds with blue eyes!"

He was a little nonplussed when I asked if he meant that it did make sense to persecute Jews with large beards, hooked noses, side curls and black hats.

Selective antisemitism was not invented by Germans. If anything, it was the Nazi regime - with steely logic and unimpeachable consistency - which first refused to differentiate between rich, princely "Germans of the Mosaic ...
