DHAKA, June 7 (IPS) -- Bangladesh's largest exporting industry,
the garment business, has averted the threat of a U.S. boycott by
agreeing to formulate a new plan to phase-out child labor.
But observers here say the reprieve may be temporary since
several remaining issues could jeopardize any future arrangement
between the two countries.
One such memorandum of understanding (m.o.u.) to phase-out child
labor has already failed because garment industry manufacturers
believed it to be discriminatory and infringing upon Bangladesh's
rights.
