ABU DHABI, July 17 (IPS) -- Iranian officials appeared
triumphant today after the French firm "Total" indicated it was
willing to go ahead with a deal to develop two key Iranian offshore
oil fields despite U.S. pressure.
The U.S. State Department had called on the French government
on July 14 not to back the deal to develop the Sirri A and Sirri
E fields, close to the United Arab Emirates' (UAE's) territorial
waters.
Iranian officials said Washington's efforts to block the deal
between Total and the National Iranian Oil Company violated
"international law governing diplomatic relations" between
countries."
