ABIDJAN, July 23 (IPS) -- Francophone Africa is counting on
newly elected conservative French President Jaques Chirac to remain
true to the Gaullist special relationship.
They believe Chirac's choice of Africa as his first visit abroad
last week since his election on May 7 is a symbol that he will
resist pressure in Paris to reassess the close links and assistance
provided in the past to francophone states.
The Ivoirian president, Henri Konan Bedie, called him "a brother
on a friendly visit," when he hosted Chirac July 21 in the nominal
capital Yammousoukro.
