BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, Aug. 2 (IPS) -- The whirl of activity
surrounding the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN)
meetings here shows the group is fast earning its spurs as a major
international player.
From a small defensive circle of non-communist countries formed
in 1967, ASEAN has matured into a key player in Southeast Asia and
a budding bloc in the wider Asia-Pacific area.
Indeed, ASEAN has weathered near-ruptures in ties between
members and Cold War rivalries to become Southeast Asia's main
diplomatic grouping, despite different political cultures and at
times rival economic interests.
