TOKYO, Aug. 22 (IPS) -- Japan, furious over China's decision to
pursue its nuclear testing program, has abandoned its traditional
kid-glove diplomacy with Beijing and has begun talking tough with
its communist neighbor.
"Tokyo has been aware of the security threat posed by China for
several years. There is no doubt the latest test last week has
caused alarm among defense circles in Japan," says Japanese
commentator Naoki Usui.
Regional analysts say China's decision to develop its nuclear
weapons capabilities is part of its bid to become a major
international power to be reckoned with.
