LONDON, Aug 28 (IPS) -- Women form the majority of the
population living in poverty and yet are the major providers of
food. Worldwide they produce more than half of all the food that
is grown, and in Africa it is 80 percent.
To draw attention to the role of women in agriculture, the U.N.
Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) is coordinating a special
Emphasis Day on the Life and Work of Rural Women on 7 September
during the Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing.
