FREETOWN, Aug. 30 (IPS) -- Reports that a cease-fire signed last
week in Liberia is being generally observed has kindled hopes of
a similar settlement in the spin-off conflict in neighboring Sierra
Leone.
"This is a major breakthrough," exclaimed Sierra Leone's foreign
secretary, Alusine Fofana, when contacted by IPS. "The signs seem
to be that this one (the ceasefire) is going to hold and as a
nation, Sierra Leone stands to be relieved because the war here is
inextricably linked to that of Liberia."
