HONG KONG, Sept. 8 (IPS) -- Thousands of Vietnamese languishing
in Hong Kong's refugee camps face an even more uncertain future as
Hong Kong moves toward Chinese rule in 1997.
Vietnamese boat people left in Hong Kong at the change of
sovereignty on June 30, 1997, when Britain hands over its colony
to China, could be sent to re-education camps or jails on the
mainland, Alexander Casella, U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees
(UNHCR) director for Asia, said recently.
The warning comes as Hong Kong's prison services which runs all
but one of the boat people camps reportedly told the Hong Kong
government its target to clear all the camps ...
