TOKYO, Sept. 26 (IPS) -- Japan is strengthening defense ties
with South Korea, a nation it brutally colonized half a century
ago, marking a major shift in its military strategy.
Japan's defense chief, Seishiro Eto, signed a new agreement with
South Korean officials in Seoul this week to hold bilateral
consultations every year to discuss regional security and other
defense concerns.
"Cooperation with South Korea on the defense front is something
completely new for Japan," said Naoki Usui, a defense analyst and
writer.
