FREETOWN, Oct. 3 (IPS) -- An announcement today by Sierra
Leone's ruling junta that it had foiled a coup plot has fuelled
suspicion here that a return to civilian rule might be delayed in
the only African nation still in the throes of civil war.
In a message broadcast repeatedly on state radio, army spokesman
Major Karefa Kargbo said six officers had been arrested for
"plotting to overthrow the government of the National Provisional
Ruling Council (NPRC) and stop the ongoing democratization
process."
He said two others were on the run.
The news came barely a week after Sierra Leone's Interim
National Electoral Commission (INEC) ...
